A sex scene in Christopher Nolan's upcoming biopic Oppenheimer featuring lead actor Cillian Murphy reading from the Bhagavad Gita has sparked outrage in India.
The scene, which was leaked online, shows Murphy's character, J. Robert Oppenheimer, reading from the Hindu scripture while having sex with his wife, Katherine. Some Hindu groups have accused Nolan of blasphemy and have called for a boycott of the film.
"This is an anti-Hindu conspiracy," said one Hindu leader. "The Bhagavad Gita is a sacred text, and it should not be used in this way."
Others have defended Nolan, saying that he is simply trying to depict Oppenheimer's complex personality.
"The Bhagavad Gita is a book that deals with a lot of complex themes, including war, violence, and death," said one film critic. "It's not surprising that Nolan would want to include it in his film."
The controversy is likely to continue as the film's release date approaches. Oppenheimer is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 21, 2023.
